Accomplished Erzgebirge locals still have a singular command of the techniques involved in craftsmanship, those such as ring-turned or chip-tree woodcarving. In numerous family businesses and workshops, the most diverse small wooden works of art are carved, turned, milled, and painted. It is a true joy to watch these craftsmen at work.
The area around the toy village of Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Erzgebirge wood art. At one time – as the yields from the mining industry dwindled – it developed this skilful and artistic woodworking into the region’s new branch of trade. The “Echt Erzgebirgische Holzkunst“® products have made the Erzgebirge famous around the world. Woodcarving, sculpturing, and the production of ornamental notions became another important livelihood.
