2020: Industrial Culture Year in the Erzgebirge

Due to the current measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the 4th Saxon State Exhibition will also remain closed. This concerns both the central exhibition in the Audi-Bau Zwickau and the venue exhibitions in Zwickau, Chemnitz, Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge, Crimmitschau and Freiberg.

Zwickau, Oelsnitz and Freiberg are celebrating 500 years of industry and trade in the Erzgebirge under the slogan, “Boom! 500 Years of Industrial Culture in Saxony”.

This is also the theme of the fourth Saxon State Exhibition, which is being held from 11 July to 1 November 2020. Three of Saxony’s six venues are in the Erzgebirge region:

AutoBoom. This exhibition at the August Horch Museum comprises three different areas exploring the future of mobility and of the car, focusing particularly on vehicle production in Saxony.

SilverBoom. This tour takes visitors to specially selected underground laboratories and delves into pioneering scientific and geoscientific research being conducted by the Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg University of Mining and Technology). The subterranean tour shows the various ways this mine has been used over the years, and sheds light on the “silver boom” as it is today and as it may be in the future. After an eventful visit, you’ll need to remember to clean your boots as you wait for the signal to ascend from the “Reiche Zeche” silver mine!

CoalBoom. The CoalBoom exhibition at the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum unearths the secrets of the 300 million year‑old “black diamonds”, explains how they were mined for centuries in the region and the technologies used to process them, and demonstrates their importance for the region and its inhabitants.
