With a track length of 1,413m and featuring 18 banked curves, Altenberg is one of the most demanding artificial ice racing tracks in the world. The Altenberg racing sledge and bobsleigh track is renowned for hosting national and international competitions, including European and World Championships, as well as World Cups for bobsleigh, toboggan and skeleton.
The racing bobsleigh and skeleton track in Kohlgrund is known far beyond the borders of the Altenberg holiday region. The SachsenEnergie-Eiskanal is 1,413 meters long and has 18 steep curves. This makes the ice canal, one of the most demanding and fastest tracks in the world.
Since 1991, 13 world championships have taken place here - most recently the Bobsleigh & Skeleton World Championship 2020. Skate athletes from Saxony, for example the Olympic champion and World champion Francesco Friedrich from SC Oberbärenburg is training here. It is the venue for many national and international competitions every year, such as German championships, World cups as well as European and World championships. As a federal base for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton, the sports facility is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Saxony. The property is owned by the Saxony Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district.
Guided tours along the sport facility are taking place every Tuesdays from 10 a.m.
